En Europe et aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique, les grandes scènes animées constituées d'automates électriques, parfois très complexes, étaient à la mode durant les premières décennies du XX ème siècle.

Ces animations étaient en particulier exposées à Noël dans les vitrines des grands magasins parisiens : Galeries Lafayette, Au bon marché, La Samaritaine, Le Printemps; Elles drainaient des milliers de personnes et il était difficile de se frayer un chemin sur les trottoirs longeant ces magasins.
